Fact

This is not my... Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

How hard is it to live in an ethical way?

In this section we ask you to challenge us to make certain lifestyle changes each week.

Though the intention is that these changes will lead to better living we are not opposed to attempting anything providing it is legal and technically possible!

Week Three - Create something useful out of unused items around the house

On Friday I made the mistake of saying that I would spend the weekend seeing what useful things I could make out of unused items around the house.

I didn't.

Now, with Ollie and Lara away I have been challenged to see if I can make something better than my friend Sophie. A lady who is basically a lot more creative and competent than I am...

Sophie

Results of last weeks challenge - energy efficiency

Results of week 1 challenge - no meat

Susie

Susie is not renowned for her imagination. As a child, her teddies were called Lamby (a lamb), Sealy (a seal) and Doggy (a dog), though she did once turn a shopping trolley into a pet. Odds of 20/1

Monday

Progress has amounted to being amazed at some of the things other people make.

Have you seen craftster.org? It's brilliant.

(Not sure that I really want a chicken drunstick knitted purse but each to their own.)

Quite inspiring. Not inspiring enough to have actually made anything yet though...

Tuesday

Nothing yet but have had a wee look through some of the stuff on here.

These tin can motorbikes are amazing!

Might try something like that.

Done a bit too much recycling recently though - might have to drink a lot of beer in order to actually make them!

Wednesday

I failed again - but then I was working from 8am - 1am (going for the sympathhy vote on this one!) However, because of that I have now scheduled in the whole afternoon on Thursday for creating things.

Well one thing in fact.

A flag.

That can't be too hard can it.

Soph gets her houseboat back today so we are going to go and pick it up (well her brother is and we are going to help out with a couple of bouys and be generally encouraging). So we figured that we could do a spot of This is not my... promotion by making a flag for it.

I will make sure to record our efforts! Apologies in advance to Ollie who might kill me when he sees how much we destroy his brilliant logo... no harm in trying tho!

Thursday

Failure. Completely got the tides wrong and so couldn't get on the boat till it was dark meaning that it was a bit tricky to make anything.

That and the fact that there was no where else to wait for the tide than the pub... honestly - we literally could not get to the boat as it was stranded in mud in the middle of the thames.

It was all we could do...

Friday

Completely lost the challenge. Creating anything was utterly impossible after yesterday's visit to the pub. Shameful.

Sophie

One of the first to carefully fashion holes into her school jumper, to enable smoking without chilly fingers, Sophie is both practical and handy with a needle and thread. Favourite

Monday

News just in from Sophie:

"I think I'm at an advantage* seeing that I'm homeless and can raid a different house each night for items to make things with.

The first creation (with Nadia's assistance, well in fact Nadia had already made it) was a piggy bank out of an ariel box.

Nadia then came up with the idea of making a babies toy mobile thing out of a coat hanger and the carton from a 4 pack or corona, but i don't think advertising alcohol to a child at such an early age is such a good idea!"

Hmmmm - a wee bit of cheating but despite the hesitation at indoctrinating children she, at least, has something to show - darn it. Well I think she does. I am awaiting photographic evidence!

- Susie

*Soph lives on a boat - currently out of the water.

Tuesday

No creating for Soph either (and no photographic evidence yet of yesterdays creation).

She found a site which I thought might tip her well into the lead www.sneakyuses.com but the links don't work so I reckon I'm still in with a chance later in the week - Susie

Wednesday

Same as Susie.

Thursday

Same as Susie - except that Soph insists that she 'made herself drunk'.

I am not convinced that Sophie drunk can be classified as a 'useful item'....

Friday

Did vaguely better than Susie but that isn't much. Cleared up my home though and now have somewhere to live again where I promise I will be able to make stuff from now on.

Starting with.... costumes for these guys!!

(Let Sophie know if you have any costume suggestions - check out the details here.)
