Angel or Devil? Week 1
Going Veggie
Some go Veggie as they don't like eating animals. Some, as the amount of energy used and trees felled to rear cattle are detrimental to our planet. Others, I am sure, have other reasons.
But how hard is it to eat well and to avoid meat?

Ollie has the upper hand in this, being an almost vegetarian and all - going to be easy.
Monday
A sad day for pescatarians the world over. After years of abstaining from meat as such, my one true vice of seafood hoodwinked me in the form of a tuna bagel.
I stand by the fact I forgot that our week of "dare us" started this week, millions however may not buy this.
In honour of this sad fact I will punish myself by listening to INXS devil inside on repeat for the rest of the day and humbly accept my label as the first of the three of us to earn their first notch on the devil'o'meter.
Tuesday
I am stronger than this, despite spending a marathon 50hrs in front of various computers, today was a walk in the park without any meaty friends along for the ride"
Wednesday
Just biding my time till one of the other two breaks and I can redeem some self respect. I know that just opening their email accounts in morning and seeing the word spam is enough to have both Susie and Lara salivating.
Thursday
Today started just like any other innocuous day without meat that was until........two mates from work proposed that we go cash in on Yo sushi's 50% deal through the month of January.
Funnily enough the 50% actually makes it reasonably priced for "bite sized" portions that would make your average super model behave like a rampant trash compactor on turbo. We were in the midst of deepest frafery and discussing my non meat status when I do believe I was tucking into a seafood ramen, doh!!!!!
Yet it does get worse having a hankering for some fresh tuna steak I set forth to pull off any pink coloured substances from the conveyor belt. I was sadly disappointed by three plates of Beetroot when my phone rang. Who should it be but, Susie! Possibly a very timely second opportunity for the penny to drop but noooooooooooo.
So there I am juggling three plates back onto the conveyor belt while holding the phone between my head and shoulder and keeping the table entertained with my antics but still I didn't realise my mistake.
So when did I click? Obviously not with the two timely reminders mid meal. No, the penny dropped as I got back to my desk turned on my media player and the Gorrilaz song DARE came on. Both my heart and stomach sank...
I am certainly going to hell.
Friday
More Tuna. Oh dear.

Susie was once a vegetarian following a distressing incident when her mother cooked her pet rabbit (long story). However, she gave up as she didn't like vegetables - could be difficult.
Monday
Breakfast: No food in the house apart from chocolate and carrots so no temptation to gnaw into a T-bone. (Not that I often have that temptation before 9am to be fair!)
Lunch: As above. Plus encouragement came from an unexpected source. Ol made a terrible tactical tuna error. Not sure about the moral ground now that my motive for success is beating him rather than anything more altruistic - but nevermind.
Dinner: Spent a very long time in the supermarket not finding the vegetarian section (do they have one?) Eventually located some frozen nut burgers. Surprisingly good - actually.
One down 4 to go...
Tuesday
Breakfast: Toast (with Vegemite naturally)
Lunch: Potato letters!!! I made the word POD as well which was an added excitement. Then some bread. (This exercise might convince me to change my daytime eating habits actually!)
Dinner: After asking 3 lovely people in the supermarket (really is it only vegetarians in the know about where veggie food can actually be found?) I managed to track down some falafel. They were organic and delicious and cheap. Brilliant. Haven't missed meat at all yet actually.
Still happy that there is only 3 days to go...
Wednesday
Thank the lord. Lara cooked dinner. A delicious risotto and salad meaning that I was able to have some vitamins.
To be honest the lack of vitamins (lunch and breakfast being a mixture of toast and chocolate again!) is less to to do with not eating meat and more to do with running around like a crazy woman pre-site launch but at least now I am less likely to develop a rapidly deployed case of scurvy!
2 more days...
Thursday
Panic all day being more busy than a bee doing... erm.. lots of busy things so it might have come to pass that there was bread eaten and, well, chocolate. Certainly no meat but I am getting more and more concerned about the health of my diet!
Friday
It's possible that despite her convictions that she is a happy meat eater - La might actually have won....
I might have been out with my Mum and she might have wanted to go for exciting food in London and we might possibly have gone to a Korean bbq... which had beef...
But that aside - I have to say - from this whole process I have found it exceptionally easy not to eat meat.
I am not veggie but I don't like to eat non-free range or organic meat.
The problem as it is ridiculously expensive.
This test has helped me realise that I can have my crazily expensive meat - just less often - and that I can save in the interim by just having veggie stuff (tho. possibly veggie stuff with more vitamins that chocolate and bread might be better!)
So I am not an Angel this week - but I have at least realised I can be more of one in the future. Goodbye budget meat. Hello falafel.

Having been known to utter the words "Ooh I really fancy a lentil salad" this shouldn't be too hard for Lara but she can't eat wheat so her diet will be pretty limited - may struggle.
Monday
Today was hard. As always, when someone tells me I am not allowed to do something it makes me want to do it ten times more.
Hearing that Ollie was the first to go though, spurred me to reach for the rice and chickpea salad!
Tuesday
Easier than yesterday - and still beating Ollie!
Wednesday
Still going strong, and really not missing the meat. The only time I have wavered was when having to cook dinner for Susie, her mum and another friend. I felt so cheap serving up a plate of veggies and greens!
Thursday
This task is way to easy. I keep waiting for the cravings to kick in, and they are just not there.
Friday
Ollie is just useless! So the devil on this one Ols and I thought for sure I would be the first to fail. Unlike Susie I am not fearing a lack of vitamins at all. My diet has had a lot more dairy than usual, and more nuts and chickpeas, but the week has gone pretty painlessly. I could have put more into the task and actually researched the process that my meat takes to get onto my plate - I have heard so many horror stories that I always end up pretending I didn't hear them. But I am not feeling any healtheir or less lethargic as some people say happens when they stop eating meat. All I can say I guess is: Who is cooking Sunday lunch??? (I just can't give it up forever just yet!)
