This is not my... Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

My - what is this man listening too?

Last month we tried to ascertain what the man at the bottom of the page was listening to.

But what about this man? Hmmm he seems even more excited by it than the other guy!!

So you know that a song is good. But do you know why...?

Rage Against The Machine - Bulls On Parade

Well it was always going to have a political meaning if it was by “Rage Against the Machine” on the Album “Evil Empire”. Rage are renowned for their leftist leanings and the political ire in their tracks. In 93 they stood on stage for 15 mins with duct tape over their mouths to demonstrate against censorship. Before the band split they made the headlines with performances on Wall St and outside the Democratic Convention. In this track RATM attack the mindless destruction of war and how it is ‘weapons not food’ that feed the ‘war cannibal animal’. Lyrics.

Marvin Gaye - What's going on

Written by Al Cleveland and Renaldo Benson, 'What's going on' was one of the first political songs to come out of Motown. It was written in response to the Vietnam War after Marvin's brother returned from a 3 year posting. Marvin took control of the album production so that it would provide comment on life in the US as the 70's began. Lyrics.

Outkast - Bombs over Baghdad

This song has been mistaken as a response to the recent war in Iraq... however, it was written in 2000. It references the first Gulf War but as a pronouncement of Outkast's intention to make music with real meaning. Outkast did not support the war in Iraq. Lyrics.

NOFX - Don't call me white

NOFX describe themselves as 'White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean' and have been described by others as 'the funniest band in rock and roll'. This track from the 1994 Album 'Punk in Drublic' is an ironic take on racism. They continue to make statements with their music. More recently they have written two 'Rock against Bush' albums. Lyrics.

Midnight Oil - Beds are Burning

Midnight oil used their music to highlight social and ecological issues. Vocalist, Peter Garrett, is now an Australian Member of Parliament and has sat on the International Board for Greenpeace. Their 1988 track, Beds are Burning, highlights the forced movement of Aboriginal peoples from their homeland in the Gibson desert. Lyrics.
